What are you giving up for Lent?
I love that this tradition never dies. I also love how as we get older, we get creative. My boss is giving up her flat iron. I know someone giving up plastic (water bottles, plastic utensils, etc). I am giving up restaurants.
I am not sure how this is going to work. I really don't eat out that much, but on the weekend, there is some take out and quick restaurant meals. I can't fight my Thai food craving every 2 weeks. When we go out to a nice restaurant, it's ridiculous. Bottles of wines, dessert, nothing we need. I have no self control once I am in the restaurant and someone (who is paying) offers up wine and extras. Instead of trying to control the situation and demonstrate self-restraint when I am out, I am just going to stay out of temptation.
As a planner and scheduler, I have tried to dream up every scenario that I could possibly get into and tried to determine if Jesus would make an allowance. Seriously, as a good Catholic, how can I NOT have fish fry? I think Vatican II made it a mortal sin to skip a fish fry.
My point of giving up restaurants is saving money, saving calories, and not going to restaurants out of boredom and laziness (and of course, sacrificing in preparation for Easter). Chuck and I are very guilty of..."what do you want to do?" "I don't care, what do you want to do?" "Why don't we get Chinese/Dewey's/fill in the blank?" Then 2 beers into our meal, a reasonable dinner has doubled in price. Again, since I can't say no, I am removing myself from the situation.
Best of luck to all of you in your lenten promises, I know I will need it.

One year I gave up fried food except for fish fries. I felt like the community building at the fish fries was very important to my spiritul life!
I am not sure yet what I am going to give up or do yet.

P.S. We should have you over for a yummy home cooked meal.
Very, very good idea Anna. I'm not Catholic, but I think I need to copy you. No restaurants for Denae! Too bad for Ben.
